Genetic Diplomacy: Indonesia Bolsters Nigeria’s Food Security Through BBIB Singosari

Indonesia’s Contribution to Global Food Sovereignty

SOKOTO, NIGERIA – The successful Artificial Insemination (AI) program in Sokoto and Kebbi States marks a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Nigeria. This collaboration, spearheaded by Indonesia’s BBIB Singosari, transcends simple technical assistance, embodying the spirit of South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) to support global food sovereignty.

The initiative has yielded remarkable results with the birth of dozens of high-quality calves. By utilizing superior frozen semen from Indonesia’s elite bulls, the program demonstrates that Indonesian reproductive technology is uniquely suited to address livestock challenges across West Africa.

As the implementing agency, BBIB Singosari’s mission is to transfer the genetic excellence of Indonesian cattle, renowned for their resilience and high productivity in tropical climates. This success has earned high praise from the Nigerian government. Dr. Bashar Gwanda of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development in Sokoto noted that this initiative has fundamentally reshaped the livestock landscape in the region.

“This is diplomacy through science and technology,” said drh. Sarastina,MP Expert of BBIB Singosari. She emphasized that this achievement solidifies Indonesia’s position as a leader in providing livestock solutions for developing nations. Through technical assistance and the 2024 Frozen Semen Donation Program, the adoption of AI technology in Nigeria has accelerated at an unprecedented pace.

The impact of this program extends far beyond livestock birth rates. Diplomatically, it showcases Indonesia’s commitment—through Indonesian AID—to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in eradicating poverty and hunger. By enhancing livestock quality, local farmers’ incomes have risen, strengthening economic stability at the grassroots level.

This collaboration is poised to become a regional model for other African nations. With sustained support, the Indonesia–Nigeria partnership is set to strengthen the livestock industry across continents, proving that technological innovation is the ultimate key to international food security.
